Quick Tip: Tipping Baggage Handlers At Airports

Tipping is always a mystery to me. The amount varies depending on the industry, but since you’re here for travel, here’s a quick tip to get you through the airport.

Baggage handlers should get a tip depending on how many bags you’re checking. “Consumer Reports,” Trip Advisor and “U.S. News and World Report” all agree that the standard tipping should be about $1-$2 bucks per bag. I have a soft spot for the baggage handlers who go above and beyond. Especially if they know I am racing to catch my flight. If weather conditions are extreme, tip towards the higher end of the scale. Also, if all you have is a $5 dollar bill, and the baggage handler is only checking 1 or 2 bags for you, don’t ask for change back.

Cash seems to be the best way to tip, but let’s say you forgot to hit up the ATM before your flight…You can express your gratitude in the form of a written “Thank You” or you can make a call to their supervisor. Just grab the person’s name and send an email to the airline to report the awesome service you received!
