Straying from The Pack

Group trips can be great! In theory, having all your friends and family together for a vacation sounds ideal… but that’s not always the reality. It takes a lot longer to make plans, arguments can ensue, and let’s be honest, sometimes people just get on your damn nerves! I had this exact experience this year on a destination wedding in Aruba.

My family and friends enjoyed the beach front bungalows of the Ritz-Carlton, which is cool for the first few days, but Aruba is a small island with PLENTY of sites to explore. So I decided to venture alone, and it was the best few hours I have ever spent.

I went on a 4 hour booze cruise and snorkeling trip to the other side of the island. I was able to take time for myself, meet new people, and most of all, have my own personal experience while on vacation.

Here are a few things to remember when going it alone:

  • Break it to your group, nicely. Tell them your plans to do a few hours of solo exploring, but it has nothing to do with them. Give them a reasonable time frame of when you will be gone, and they should be pretty understanding.
  • Make sure you tell them, where you will be, who you will be with (group tours etc.)
  • Meet people! some of the best friends I have ever met in my life. So introduce yourself, talk to new people, and make some new friends.
  • Don’t have FOMO! ย Right now what the rest of your group is doing should not matter, just bask in the fact that you are getting your own unique experience!
