In recent weeks, the world has become increasingly aware of the injustices that black people and our communities face. Sometimes making a difference can feel like it’s beyond our reach but one of the simplest ways we can contribute is by putting money back into our communities. Below is a list of black-owned restaurants you’ll want to check out if you find yourself in Austin, Texas.
Bird Bird Biscuit
Inspired by their obsession with sandwiches and biscuits, longtime owner/operators of Austin’s Thunderbird Coffee decided to open a restaurant that focused exclusively on biscuit sandwiches. It took two and a half years, the addition of a third partner and consulting with a secret Austin “Biscuit Whisperer” but Bird Bird Biscuit finally opened in 2018 and has quickly solidified itself as an Austin staple with lines out the door (don’t worry, they move fast).

Baby Greens
“In January of 2004, Baby Greens started a fast-food revolution by serving made-to-order salads and wraps out of a tiny drive-thru building in South Austin. What once was a hamburger joint, became the home of the first fast-food salad restaurant. Baby Greens quickly became the destination for fresh and healthy fast food, winning many awards for serving the best salads & dressings in town.” Now located in North Austin, Baby Greens continues to provide delicious and healthy fast food to those looking for a change of pace from the heavy (but oh-so-delicious) bar-b-que Texas is known for.

Hoover says he has always associated food with bringing people together. A fifth-generation Texan, his food is influenced by the state itself. “The delicious and distinct flavors on our menu strive to bring together the melting pot of cultures and people who make up this great state.”
